Abstract

1,201,042. Electrostatic charging apparatus. ADDRESSOGRAPH-MULTIGRAPH CORP. Oct.30, 1967 [Nov.7, 1966], No.49241/67. Heading G2H. An apparatus for electrostatically charging a sheet 10 having a photo-conductive layer 12 on a support 14 has primary charging electrodes 18, 20 and a modulating electrode 30. The electrode 18 has a fine conductive wire 22 surrounded by a conductive shield 24, while the electrode 20 has a fine conductive wire 26 surrounded by a shield 28. The wire 22 is connected to a negative high potential D.C. source 23, e.g. 4,000-6,000 volts while the wire 26 is connected to a similar but positive high voltage source 25. The modulating electrode 30 has a wire 32 connected to the source 25. The modulating electrode lowers the primary charge by 10 to 20%. This is stated to neutralize peak concentrations of charge and lower the primary voltage so that upon exposure exposed areas reach a lower charge level to minimize toner attraction in background areas. The primary charge may be imparted by a roller. Filamentary plastic material (66) Fig. 2 (not shown) guide the sheet being charged out of co ntact with the charging wires.
