Abstract

1,200,926. Radiation absorbing materials. CHEMTREE CORP. 28 Sept., 1967 [30 Sept., 1966], No. 44168/67. Heading G6R. A radiation shielding composition comprises a compound of one or more metallic elements with an atomic number from 57 to 71 inclusive (rare earth elements). The carbonates of these metals, in powder form, may be used in which case they are mixed with water to a paste consistency and formed into a desired shape, whereupon they set upon standing into a structural material comparable in strength to wall plaster. A highly effective neutron shield is obtained by combining dysprosium carbonate and gadolinium carbonate in this manner, the dysprosium and carbon acting as moderators with the gadolinium capturing the neutrons after reduction to thermal energy. Against a high energy flux the materials may be laminated with dysprosium carbonate for the source face layer, followed by a layer largely of dysprosium carbonate with some gadolinium carbonate, a layer of equal parts, a layer largely of gadolinium carbonate with some dysprosium carbonate, and finally a layer entirely of gadolinium carbonate. Such a laminate may be used to advantage for shielding space vehicles and missiles. Combination of the carbonates with lead powder is desirable in some cases because addition of the lead powder improves the structural characteristics and also adds the attenuating properties of lead. The metallic elements may be in the form of the carbonate of a mixture of rare eath elements as contained in an ore concentrate or tailings. Where gadolinium oxide is used, admixture with lead powder is essential if good setting is to be obtained.
