Abstract

1298469 Friction gearing SCRIVEN & PAGET Ltd 4 Dec 1970 [8 Dec 1969] 59866/69 Heading F2Q [Also in Division D1] Means for driving a pair of spindles 3, 4 adapted to run at speeds of the order of 600,000 r.p.m., e.g. tubular spindles used in false-twist yarn crimping machines, comprises two coplanar driving and support wheels 1, 2 either or both of which may be power driven, and two horseshoe magnets 35, 36 with polepieces 38, 37 so shaped and located that each spindle is attracted more strongly into contact with the wheel by which it is supported than the wheel by which it is driven. Thus, with the wheels rotating anticlockwise, the spindle 4 is driven by the wheel 2 and supported by the wheel 1 and the magnet 36 attracts it in the direction 9, whilst the spindle 3 is driven by the wheel 1 and attracted by the magnet 35 in the direction 10 towards its support wheel 2. Each spindle 3, 4 is restrained against endwise movement by a flange coacting with peripheral grooves in the wheels 1, 2 or by a pair of flanges spaced to straddle the thickness of the wheels. The wheels have facings of tough, rubber-like synthetic material for frictional engagement with the spindles and are mounted on shafts 24 carried in eccentrically mounted bearings for adjustment purposes. The shafts may be driven by electric motor or have pulleys &c. by which they may be driven when brought into contact with a moving belt.
