1294223 Amalgam gun J R JOCHEMS 16 Jan 1970 [22 Jan 1969] 2298/70 Heading A5R A device for filling a dental or other cavity with amalgam comprises a cylinder 1 connectable to a hose 2 at one end, and formed with a wall 4 and an external curved tube 3 at the other, a piston 5, movably mounted inside the cylinder 1 with a piston rod 6a, 6b, 6a being connected to a flexible rod 7 connected to a plunger 8 slidable in the tube 3, 6b being connected to a further plunger 11 slidable in a second cylinder 12 substantially coaxial with the first cylinder 1, and open to the atmosphere, as shown. The rod 6b extends through an orifice 9 in a transverse wall 10, which orifice is adapted to form a sealing engagement with the plunger 11, and a further orifice 14 is formed in the wall of the cylinder near to the wall 4. Amalgam is placed into the open end of tube 3 and compressed air fed to the piston 5 which then moves towards the end wall 4 of the cylinder thereby forcing amalgam from the tube 3 into a cavity to be filled. This movement continues until the plunger 11 enters the orifice 9, piston 5 then being to the left side of the orifice 14 as seen in Fig. 2 (not shown), through which the pressurised air in the piston space escapes. A tamping action is produced by the pressing of the end of the tube 3 against the tooth causing the plunger 8 at the end of its movement, to be pushed slightly back into the tube 3, the pressure behind the piston 5 thereby being allowed to increase. A rod 16 is connected coaxially with the plunger 11, which rod has two opposed, staggered sets of teeth adapted to cooperate with two coupled pins 19 which pins are spring loaded in one direction. The external movement of these pins 19 allows the rod to move to the left, in a stepby-step manner, as shown, by one half of a tooth pitch at one time.
