Abstract

1292445 Power assisted steering SIMMS GROUP RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 8 Jan 1970 [23 Jan 1969] 3753/69 Heading B7H A power steering system includes a shaft 2 connected to a steering-wheel (not shown) and a shaft 3 connected to steering gear (not shown), the shafts 2 and 3 being connected by a torsion bar 4. An internally splined sleeve 7 is axially slidable on complementary splines on the shafts 2 and 3, the splines on shaft 2 being circumferentially narrower to permit limited rotational movement between the shafts 2 and 3. A slot 10 in the sleeve 7 engages a pin 11 threaded in shaft 2. Thereby, relative rotation of shafts 2 and 3 produces axial movement of the sleeve 7 which through a fork 13 axially adjusts a spring-urged valve 14 to control the flow of fluid supplied through an inlet 19 to a gear motor 22, 23 which applies torque to the shaft 3 to assist the movement of the steering gear. The degree of assistance afforded throughout the relative movement of the shafts 2, 3 may be varied by varying the shape of slot 10.
