Abstract

1292224 Extruding P.T.F.E. FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 4 March 1970 [5 March 1969] 10419/70 Heading B5A [Also in Division H5] An electrical heating conductor comprises a conductive core 9 of a mixture of graphite, and/ or soot with polytetrafluoroethylene (P.T.F.E.), the weight ratio of graphite and/or soot to P.T.F.E. being from 0À1 : 1 to 2 : 1, and an insulating covering 10 of P.T.F.E. The heater is preformed in a mould, Figs. 1, 2 (not shown), and then extruded through a die 8 having, for example, a circular orifice. The core and covering may include a lubricant, such as white spirit, which is removed by heating, after extrusion, in a continuous heating furnace. The extrudate is then sintered and solidified. Alternatively, a rod-shaped extrudate made without the covering 10 is wound with a non-sintered P.T.F.E. tape and then sintered, or is provided with an extruded covering separately. The heating conductors are of circular or rectangular cross-section, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown). The preferred relative proportions of graphite, soot and P.T.F.E., and the particle sizes, are specified in a number of examples.
