Abstract
1292008 Making pitch OSAKA GAS CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [1 May 1970] 25337/71 Heading C5E Pitch is made from coal tar or tar obtained by the thermal or catalytic cracking of petroleum, in a two-stage continuous or batch process. The tar is first heated at a temperature in the range 320 to 470 C. and a pressure in the range 1 to 20 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> to produce gas, oil and pitch. The oil and pitch are separated by distillation and the oil heated at a temperature in the range 370 to 540 C. and at least 10 C. above the temperature in the first stage, and a pressure in the range 3 to 35 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>. The pitch from both stages has a softening point of at least 60 C., and benzene- and quinolene-insoluble contents of 20 to 45% and 3 to 20% for the first pitch; and 15 to 40% and not more than 2% for the second pitch, percentages by weight. Oil separated by distillation from the second stage pitch may be subjected to a third heating stage, again at 10 C. at least above the second stage and at a temperature and a pressure in the ranges 380 to 560 C. and 3 to 35 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>
