Abstract
129,196. Burgess, W. E. Nov. 13, 1918. Screw - and - nut mechanism. - Balls C are arranged to circulate between the threads A<2>, B<2> of a screw A and nut B in such manner that at the limit of travel of the balls in the nut, they pass from one face of the thread to the other. Passage-ways B<3> and guide means, such as stops B<4>, are provided in the nut to allow this circulation of the balls. The balls may be introduced through an aperture closed by a plug B<5>. The threads may be of a form such that the balls take both lateral and axial thrust, and the depth of the threads may be slightly greater than the diameter of a ball. Where the balls take axial thrust alone, the threads are correspondingly formed and lateral support may be obtained by contact of the edges of the threads.
