1291752 Pipe couplings STILE CRAFT MFRS Inc 27 May 1970 25446/70 Heading F2G A pipe coupling has a-stepped female adapter 10 able to sealingly engage with a number of plugs 30, (31), Fig. 3, not shown), having identical features but different dimensions. As shown in Fig. 1, the adapter 10 has a front body portion 11 and a rear body portion 12 having a first socket portion 13, a second socket portion 14 and an intermediate socket portion 15. The plug 30 has a nose section 50 and a tail section 51 the latter including a forward portion 53 and a rearward portion 54 separated by peripheral groove 55. Depending on their particular dimensions the insertion of one of these interchangeable plugs 30, (31) will be limited by one or more of the shoulders 20, 21, 22 on the adapter fitting 10. The plugs 30, (31) are locked in position by detent balls 27 within holes 26 which are depressed by sleeve 32 under the action of spring 33. Sealing is selectively performed by rings 17, 25. As shown in Fig. 2, both rings are in use. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the plug (31), which has a shorter and wider nose section (60) only engages the ring 25 and distorts it. To prevent unnecessary wear of the ring 25 a valve 40, having notched legs 44 designed to engage the nose section of such plugs, attempts, under the action of spring 37, to disengage the locked plug; sufficient movement is produced to eliminate distortion of the ring and maintain a seal.
