Abstract
1289673 Light conducting glass fibres CARLZEISS-STIFTUNG [trading as JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN] 5 Jan 1970 [10 Jan 1969] 481/70 Heading C1M In the production of a light conducting glass fibre, a fibre is drawn from an alkali-metal oxide containing glass (P), either from the melt or from a rod, and prior to drawing, if in rod form, or subsequent to drawing for either form, the glass (P) is subjected to an ion-exchange operation whereby alkali-metal ions from an external source replace smaller alkali-metal ions in the glass (P) to modify its surface and thereby provide a surface region (Q) having a diffuse boundary and a refractive index lower than that of the glass (P). Preferably the glass (P) contains Li 2 O, the Li being replaced in the surface by Na or K ions. Two examples using respectively sodium nitrate and a potassium salt are given, with temperatures, drawing speeds and final thicknesses of fibre and outer zone.
