1337490 Glass for optical elements CARLZEISS-STIFTUNG [trading as JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN] 6 Aug 1971 [7 Aug 1970] 37137/71 Heading C1M A glass consists of, by weight, SiO 2 , 43-62% ; PbO, 2-14À5%; ZrO 2 , 0-3%; P 2 O 5 , 0-2%; Al 2 O 3 , 5-21%, alkali metal oxide, 10À5-25% BaO, 0À2-0À9%; ZnO, 0-2À0%, and possibly a refining agent such that (a)+SiO 2 = 63-76%, and The glass may be used to produce optical elements such as glass fibres or blocks whose refractive index varies towards the surface, such variation being produced by ion exchange. The content of alkali metal oxide is selected to allow lowering or raising of the refractive index at the surface.
