Abstract
1287855 Self-extinguishing polymer compositions KOPPERS CO Inc 19 April 1971 [3 April 1970] 26055/71 Heading C3P [Also in Division D1] Self-extinguishing polymer compositions comprise (1) a copolymer of an alkenyl aromatic and a conjugated diene, and optionally an unsaturated acid and/or amide, (2) a minor amount of tris - (2,3 - dibromopropyl)phosphate and (3) a synergistic amount of mono-, di- or tri-ammonium phosphate. They may be obtained in latex form by conventional emulsion polymerization in the presence of components (2) and (3), or these may be added to pre-formed latices. The compositions may be cast as films or applied to fabrics. In examples the polymer is derived from styrene, butadiene, an acid selected from acrylic, methacrylic and itaconic, and in some cases acrylamide. In Example III a phenolic antioxidant, aminomethyl propanol and sodium hexametaphosphate are added to the latex.
