1284877 Powder type portable fire extinguishers SAMUEL JONES & CO (ENG) Ltd 11 Nov 1969 [18 Nov 1968] 54565/68 Heading ASA A powder/pressurised gas type portable fire extinguisher has the gas cartridge 9 inside powder discharge tube 7 in sealed relation with a fitting providing radial ports 16 for gas release above the powder and axial ports 13 for emission of powder passed round the cartridge to a discharge point. Metal fitting 4, internally threaded into neck ring 3 and sealed at 5, has lower part 6 threaded with upper part 7 of the powder discharge tube. Lower end 8 of the tube abuts the base of cartridge 9 and has ports 10 for the passage of powder into annular space 11. A central recess in the lower face of 4 is provided with sealing washer 12 abutting the piercable nose of 9, and six axial ports 13 (Fig. 2) surrounding the recess permit powder flow from 11 to outlet chamber 14. A pair of gas discharge bores 16 extend radially from smaller recess 15 to open into cylinder 1. Threaded bore 17 houses powder discharge tube 18 locked against an internal shoulder by ring nut 19, and cartridge piercer 21 axially mounted in 18 and extending into recess 15 carries valve 20 at a position adjacent the flared lower face of 18. Cap 22 overlies tube 18 with a port in 18 aligned with discharge nozzle 23, and retains fixed lever 25. Movable lever 26 abuts the top of 21, compression spring 27 between the cap and the enlarged head of 21 normally acting to urge the piercer from the cartridge nose and the valve to its closed position. On manual depression of lever 26, cartridge 9 is pierced and valve 20 opened. Gas discharged through ports 16 forces powder via annulus 11 and ports 13 to chamber 14 whence it passes to tube 18 and nozzle 23. Lever 26 may be operated as required for intermittent discharge.
