Abstract

1284472 Foamable polymer compositions UGINE KUHLMANN 30 Dec 1969 [30 Dec 1968] 63309/69 Headings C3C and C3P The expansibility of (A) a thermoplastic "styrene" homopolymer, "styrene"/"acrylonitrile" copolymer, "styrene"/butadiene polymer, or A.B.S. copolymer is improved by adding to it, before, during or after the addition of a foaming agent, 0À2 to 80 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the above copolymer, of (B), a thermoplastic "styrene" homopolymer, "styrene"/"acrylonitrile", "styrene"/methylmethacrylate copolymer, or a "styrene"/"acrylonitrile"/methylmethacrylate terpolymer, said polymer being compatible with the first polymer and having an average molecular weight which is higher than that of the first polymer, and is above 3 x 10<SP>5</SP>. 'Styrene" and "acrylonitrile" include substituted derivatives thereof and mixtures thereof with styrene and acrylonitrile respectively. The polymers may contain minor proportions of units of a cross-linking monomer. In the examples high molecular weight polymers (B) are prepared in aqueous systems in the presence of sodium bicarbonate as the expanding agent, which is incorporated into the polymer. These polymers are then mixed with polymers (A) which are polystyrene, high impact polystyrene, A.B.S. terpolymer, and styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer, the composition then being extruded or moulded, and foamed.
