1,210,672. Porous shaped articles of styrene polymers. MONTECATINI EDISON S.p.A. 16 Nov., 1967 [18 Nov., 1966], No. 52281/67. Headings C3C, C3G and C3P. Porous shaped articles of a styrene polymer, viz. a homopolymer of styrene, a copolymer of styrene with other monomers and containing at least 50% by wt. of styrene and/or derivatives thereof or a graft copolymer of styrene, are made by extruding the polymer containing 1-20% by wt. of one or more blowing agents in the presence of 0À1-10% by wt. of at least one nucleating agent which is an organic homo- or co-polymer of an unsaturated monomer containing at least one carboxylic acid or anhydride groups. In the example, polystyrene in bead form and containing petroleum ether is extruded using as nucleating agents a copolymer of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and acrylic acid with optionally sodium bicarbonate; comparative tests used as nucleating agents, citric acid with optionally sodium bicarbonate, and potassium metasilicate.
