Abstract
1283282 Tubular heat exchangers WAAGNER-BIRO AG 24 Sept 1970 [26 Sept 1969] 45672/70 Heading F4S In a heat exchanger comprising a plurality of annular groups 1 of spirally wound tubes separated from one another by frusto-conical baffles 9, the tubes are spaced apart by a plurality of spacer members 3 extending between and welded to an arrangement of inner and outer circumferentially spaced alongate support bars 4 and 5 extending parallel to the central axis of the heat exchanger. The baffles 9 are also welded to the support bars. A centrally located inverted conical baffle 2 serves to guide one heat exchange fluid over the surface of the spiral tubes through the interior of which the other heat exchange fluid flows. As shown, the spacer members, which serve to maintain a given spacing both between adjacent convolutions of the same tube and convolutions of adjacent tubes, are in the form of metal wires of wave-shaped configuration. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown), the spacer members are in the form of annular rings or sleeves (6) which surround and engage tube convolutions and are welded to each other at their points of contact and to the support bars. In a further embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown), the spacer members comprise angled strips (7) of sheet metal which are welded together to form a honeycombe structure, the ends of the strips being welded to the support bars. The strips may alternatively be wave-shaped (Fig. 8, not shown).
