Abstract
1283103 Polymeric antioxidants CIBAGEIGY AG 20 June 1969 [21 June 1968] 31397/69 Heading C3P [Also in Divisions C2 and C5] Polymeric antioxidants are prepared by polymerizing a monomeric ester, thioester, amide or imide of an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid containing in the moiety attached to the unsaturated carboxylic acyl moiety a phenol group of the formula in the presence of a free radical initiator which is an azo derivative or an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic acyl peroxide. The above monomers may be derived, for example, from acrylic, methacrylic, maleic, fumaric, citraconic, mesaconic, itaconic, crotonic or cinnamic acid. The monomers may be homopolymerized or copolymerized by bulk, solution, suspension or emulsion methods. Mercaptan chain transfer agents can be used to provide low molecular weight polymers (oligomers). Suitable comonomers for preparing copolymers include alkyl (meth)- acrylates, styrenes, vinyl esters, dienes, vinyl ethers, alpha-olefins and N-vinyl monomers; particular examples are methyl vinyl ether, vinyl acetate, styrene, methyl, octyl, dodecyl and octadecyl methacrylates, 1-vinyl naphthalene and N-vinylcarbazole. The polymeric antioxidants are useful in application to synthetic resins, mineral oils, animal and vegetable fats, waxes and rubbers. Examples illustrate their incorporation into polypropylene sheet or film. Synergistic antioxidant effect is obtained by admixing the polymeric antioxidant with distearyl-thiodipropionate or dilaurylthiodipropionate.
