Abstract

1282880 Regulating I C engine idling speed JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 3 Dec 1969 [6 Dec 1968] 58195/68 Heading F1B [Also in Division G3] To maintain the idling speed of an I.C. engine substantially constant a valve 28, which directly or indirectly controls the flow of atmospheric air into the induction pipe 10 downstream of the throttle valve 7, is operated by a solenoid 29 or an electric motor (33), Figs.4 and 5 (not shown), receiving a signal representing the difference between signals related to the actual engine speed and a desired constant speed. The D.C. voltage V S from a tachometer generator 12 fed through a filter F and a reference voltage V R from a potentiometer P are fed to a comparator 14 including an amplifier A1 and the resulting error signal is fed through an amplifier A2 and a buffer stage BF to the solenoid 29. The error signal may be fed through an amplifier (A3), Fig. 5 (not shown), to the electric motor (33). A circuit which differentiates the output of the generator 12 with respect to time may be provided. The voltage V R may be varied manually or in response to operation of an engine driven compressor. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 the flow of air through a duct 23, leading from the induction pipe downstream of an air cleaner, is controlled by the valve 20 and the pressure in the chamber 18 above the valve diaphragm 17 is controlled by the valve 28. The engine may be supplied with fuel by a carburetter or intake manifold injection.
