Abstract

1281654 Unloading wharfs HAMBURGER GASWERKE GmbH 8 Jan 1971 [26 Jan 1970] 958/71 Heading B8E Coke is discharged from a wharf 1 on to a conveyer belt 2 by the sequential opening and closing of a plurality of discharge gates 3, the latter being opened in response to a signal dependent in the length of time the coke has been deposited adjacent a particular gate. Each gate 3 is pivoted at 5 to the wharf structure 8 through framework 4 which supports a counterweight 6, the top end of the gate including a coupling member 7. A coke discharge machine 10 on wheels 11, 12 is drivable along the wharf and includes a pair of hydraulic, pneumatic or electric actuator devices 16, each having an electromagnet 18 which is coupled to a member 7, when energized through a control device, whereby the adjacent gate 3 is opened by the device 16. Cams may be provided on the structure 8 to align the magnets 18 with the coupling members 7. A temperature sensor 20 on the machine 10 is responsive to high temperature of the coke on the wharf adjacent thereto, to block opening or cause closure of the gate 3 and/or to arrest the conveyer 2 together with operation of an alarm. A sensor 22 depending from an arm 21 of the machine 10 completes. an electrical circuit with the adjacent gate 3 and coke, if present, whereby an adjacent pair of gates are operable by the pair of actuation devices 16. The upstream gate is held open whilst the adjacent downstream gate is repeatedly opened and closed until the circuit is broken by lack of coke, whereupon the gates are closed, whereafter the machine 10 is moved along one step and the previously intermittently opened gate is held open whilst the next downstream gate is repeatedly opened and closed. This process is continued until the wharf is emptied. As an alternative to the sensor device 22, signals are transmitted to the discharge machine via cams in the path of the machine, these cams being responsive with timed delay, to other operations on the coke.
