Abstract

1280380 Tape cable connectors ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 10 Dec 1970 [15 Dec 1969] 58641/70 Heading H2E A flat cable receptacle connector 16 comprises spring contacts 22, mounted in a cavity, which terminate in tines 36, there being clearance spaces above and below the contacts 22 with, in the lower space, a flat cable 150 and, in the upper space, an actuating plate 162 which moves the tines to pierce the cable insulation and contact the cable conductors. The bottom surface of the actuating plate has axial ribs (168, Fig. 4 not shown), which form insulating barriers between adjacent contacts. The cable 150 is inserted from the rear until it abuts a shoulder 58 in the cavity. The spring contacts 22, which are unstressed before the actuating plate is inserted, each comprise a curved beam 32, which mainains a force on the cable, a central portion 26, and a tapered end 24, which mates with a fork-type connector 122. After full insertion of the cable and the actuating plate a cover 74 is slipped over the rear of the connector and clipped on to lips 72. The contacts 22 can alternatively be used with plug connectors. Raised portions 92 and grooves 94 allow connectors 16 to be stacked and positioned and screws 98 fasten the connectors together. Polarizing parts 88 are mounted in hexagonal recesses 84.
