June 26, 1917: Bulkhead doors.-Hinged watertight doors or covers 1, serving to close apertures in watertight bulkheads, decks, or hatches, are secured by a number of sliding bolts 9 adapted to be simultaneously operated from either side of the door from a single control member, such as a scroll plate 6, the bevelled extremities of the bolts entering wedge-sha.ped slots in retaining members 10 secured to the framing adjacent to the corners of the door and also in intermediate positions, one of the retaining members, Fig. 3, being provided with a rounded portion to prevent the bolts from projecting more than a predetermined amount during the closing movement of the door. To facilitate the fastening operation, one of the bolts is caused to come into operation before the others bv reducing the distance between the end of this bolt and its retaining block 10, or by modifying the shape of the corresponding cam slot in the scroll-plate 6.
