Abstract

1279068 Caps for bottles AMERICAN FLANGE & MFG CO Inc 19 April 1971 [6 April 1970] 25255/71 Heading B8T A lightweight metal closure cap 1 is removed from a container by tearing a section along weakened score lines. In order to reduce the jerk caused by the application of the extra force required to finally separate the torn cap from the container, the lines at the final section of the tear are scored deeper than those at the beginning. A pair of score lines formed in the surface of the cap begin on the edge of skirt 4 on either side of pull member 7, cross the skirt and a curved juncture portion substantially parallel and extend across top panel 2, flaring outwardly at 10a to terminate at the opposite edge of the skirt. A pull portion of a first depth extends to point 14 on each score line after which a second greater score depth is maintained. A transitional portion of gradually increasing depth lies between the two and counteracts the increased force required at the flared portion. Since the final portion is weakest, very little extra force is required to finally remove the cap remnants from the bottle and the tearing action is substantially uniform throughout.
