Abstract
1275263 Soldering JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 23 July 1969 [22 Aug 1968] 40177/68 Heading B3R [Also in Division H5] A gas gun for use in soldering semi-conductors to printed circuits comprises a metal conduit 12 through which gas to be heated, e.g. a 90% N 2 -10% H 2 mixture, flows surrounded by a helical resistance heated element 18 embedded in a layer 17 of fireclay. A gas inlet 14 is provided at one end of conduit 12 and a jet 13 at the other end. The conduit 12 has a collar 15 at one end against which a spun glass sleeve 16 abuts. Fireclay is worked into the sleeve 16, the heating element 18 is wound on the fireclay layer so formed, and a further layer of fireclay is placed on top of the heater to form the embedding layer of insulation 17. A double layer 19 of asbestos cloth is wound over layer 17, and a stainless steel tube 21 and cover 22 are fitted to complete the assembly of the gas gun. An air gap 23 is left between the tube 21 and the asbestos layer 19. An asbestos tape (not shown) is wound around tube 21 after firing the fireclay. A thermocouple, not shown, is accommodated in a bore in conduit 12.
