Abstract

1,274.882. Implanted electrical devices. DEVICES Ltd. 28 May, 1970 [28 Feb., 1969], No. 11005/69. Heading A5R. An implantable electrical medical device comprises a hermetically sealed case 1 containing the electrical components of the device except a power source and having a plurality of electrical lead-throughs 2, 3, 4, B1, B2 passing through the case wall and being sealed therein and insulated therefrom by glass or ceramic lead through seals 5-9, and a power source case 10 comprising an encapsulating body of elastomer or resin material enclosing one or more electric cells, an electrical connection being provided between the circuit in case 1 and the cells in case 10. The device may be telemetry equipment for monitoring body functions, a muscle stimulator, or preferably a demand heart pacemaker. The electrical connection may be a plug and socket or an insulated lead. The case 1 may be made of metal, such as stainless steel, or of glass or ceramic coated with a metal layer, the case or its metal layer being connected as an earth electrode. The cells may be mercury cells or radioisotope cells, the case 10 being slightly porous to prevent pressure build-up due to gas emission from the cells.
