Abstract

1,273,145. Silicon nitride. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. 16 July, 1969 [26 April, 1968], No. 20061/68. Heading C1A. Silicon nitride is made by reacting silicon with nitrogen in a gaseous atmosphere at 1180- 1500‹ C. consisting of or containing nitrogen to which oxygen is admitted during at least part of the reaction period on a total quantity of not more than 1À8% by weight of the silicon. A seeding material, e.g. magnesium oxide, aluminium oxide or pre-formed silicon nitride may be added to the silicon in an amount of 0À1- 50% by weight of the silicon. In one embodiment, silicon powder containing 0À2% by wt. of alumina is heated, in alumina boats, to 1180‹ C. under an atmosphere of nitrogen containing 10-50% by volume of argon. After admitting air into the furnace over a period of 1 hour while raising the temperature to 1195‹C., the temperature is raised 15‹ C. per hour to 1300- 1500‹ C. until the nitrogen required to form Si 3 N 4 has been absorbed. The nitride is mainly the alpha-form. The product may be mixed with magnesium oxide catalyst and hot-pressed to give the beta-form. The process of the invention can be applied to the reaction sintering of lightweight foamed silicon structures.
