Abstract
1,272,545. Metal-vapour lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 24 June, 1970 [27 June, 1969], No. 30682/70. Heading H1D. A high-pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp having a discharge vessel whose wall is loaded by a power of between 10 and 100 W. per sq. cm. during operation and which contains a quantity of rare gas, from 0À5 to 40 mg. of mercury per c.c. of the discharge space, a quantity of sodium and/or lithium in the form of sodium iodide or lithium iodide such that unevaporated sodium iodide and/or lithium iodide is present during operation, and from 0 to 15% by weight of thallium calculated on the quantity of mercury, also contains titanium in a quantity of between 0À01 and 5% by weight of the quantity of mercury present and a quantity of iodine expressed in chemical equivalents which is at least equal to the total Na, Li, Tl and Ti expressed in chemical equivalents and which is not more than twice said total. The iodine may be introduced in elementary form or, preferably, in the form of iodides of the other elements. Lamps with a comparatively low wall loading of 10-30 w./sq. cm., e.g. for street lighting, may have 0À5-5 mg./c.c. Hg, 0À1-2% Ti and 1-15% T1. Lamps with a high loading of 30-100 w./sq. cm. may have 5-30 mg./c.c. Hg, 0À01-1% Ti and 0À5-10% Tl. Two such lamps, one of which has a double envelope, are described (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown) with a graph showing the spectral distribution (Fig. 3, not shown).
