Abstract
1,110,018. Metal-vapour lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 21 July, 1965 [25 July, 1964], No. 31001/65. Heading H1D. The filling of a compact-source mercuryvapour lamp includes a rare gas, the iodides of sodium, lithium, and thallium, and iodine in excess of that bound to the latter elements, the ratio of the distance between the electrodes to the inner diameter of the cylindrical envelope lying in the range 1 : 1 to 1 : 10, and the length of the discharge vessel being at least 25% greater than the distance between the electrodes. The sodium and lithium iodides are each in sufficient quantity to ensure the presence of the liquid compounds at the operating temperature ; the rare gas may be argon or xenon; and indium iodide may additionally be present; quantitative compositions are given. The lamp may have an auxiliary starting electrode, and an exhausted outer envelope (15, Fig. 2, not shown) provided with a coating (17) of infrared reflective tin oxide, and getter rings (16). A further coating (18) of titanium dioxide is provided at the ends of the inner envelope, to maintain the temperature in the neighbourhood of the electrodes.
