Abstract

1,272,130. Paper. SCOTT PAPER CO. 27 Aug., 1969 [29 Aug., 1968], No. 42762/69. Heading D2B. An epoxy-modified cellulosic material comprises cellulosic fibrous material discretely impregnated and reacted throughout with a cellulose-substantive polyamine having a molecular weight of 500-100,000, and a polymerisable epoxide-group-containing material having a molecular weight less than 1000. This may be prepared on a paper machine having a dryer section by intimately contacting cellulosic fibrous material with an aqueous dispersion of the polyamine; intimately contacting the fibrous material with an aqueous dispersion of the epoxide-group-containing material; and thereafter passing the fibres through the dryer section. The polyamine is preferably added to the furnish, and the epoxide-groupcontaining material to the wet web. The polyamine may be polyalkylene imine, urea-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde or polyether diamine. The epoxide-group-containing material may be vinyl cyclohexone dioxide; alicyclic diepoxy carboxylate; 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether or the condensation product of bisphenol A and epichlorohydrin. The material added to the wet web may also include starch and a surfactant, e.g. polyoxyethylene oleyl ether and/or polyoxy-ethylene sorbitan monopalmitate, preferably so that the viscosity of the dispersion is less than 100 cp.
