Abstract

1,271,529. Titanium phosphate. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 2 July, 1969, No. 33379/69. Heading C1A. Fibrous crystals of titanium phosphate having a molar ratio of titanium to phosphorus of from 0À35 to 1À8, an average diameter of 0À05 to 1 micron and an avearge length of at least five times the diameter are prepared by reacting 0À5 to 5À0 molar orthophosphoric acid with a titanium compound such that a phosphate to titanium molar ratio of from 1 to 35 is provided in the reaction medium, under autogenous pressure at a temperature of 225‹ to 400‹ C. for at least fifteen minutes. Given as examples of titanium source materials are titanyl chloride, titanyl sulphate, titanium tetrachloride, titanium oxide and titanium tetraalkyl titanate. Seed crystals of finely divided titanium phosphate may be added to the reaction mixture to aid crystallization.
