Abstract

1,271,561. Electrostatic printing. RICOH K.K. April 10, 1969 [April 10, 1968], No.18330/69. Headings G2H and G2M. An electrostatic printing method comprises (1) forming a developed, hydrophobic, electrically insulating image on a substrate, (2) rendering the non-image portions conductive, (3) uniformly charging to form an electrostatic charge image, and (4) using the charge image to produce a developed image on a copy sheet. Preferably step (1) comprises (a) forming an electrostatic image on an insulating substrate (preferably electro-photographically on a supported insulating photo-conductive layer), (b) developing to form a hydrophobic, electrically insulating image and (c) either rendering the non-image areas hydrophilic with an aqueous composition before or during step (2), or transferring the developed image to an electrically insulating, hydrophilic substate. Copy sheets may be imaged in step (4) by either developing the charge image and transferring the developed image or transferring the charge image (e.g. as in the device described and claimed in Specification 1,271,562) and developing the transferred image. An aqueous solution for rendering a ZnO electro-photographic plate hydrophilic contains Na 4 Fe (CN) 6 , (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 , (CO 2 H) 2 , (CH 2 OH) 2 and (NH 4 ) 2 CrO 4 .
