A twisting gripper for effecting a twist closure on sweet wrappers comprises jaws 27 pivotally mounted on a toothed segment 26 of a spring-loaded shift-rod 22 in a sleeve 12 and is mounted in a housing 1 for rotational, reciprocal and opening-and-closing movements. The rotational movement is effected from a drive stub 39 of a drive-shaft 14 through gears 36, 37 and 38, mounted on shafts 14, 2 and sleeve 12, respectively. The reciprocal movement is achieved by means of a wobble plate 3 mounted on shaft 2 and having an annular groove 4 receiving a journal 5 of a shift-ring 6 surrounding the wobble plate and connected at its upper end to the sleeve 12. The lower end of the shift-ring 6 is attached to a drum-type cam 13 mounted on the shaft 14, a cam roller 15 running on the cam 13 being connected through an arm 16 and shiftring 19 to an arm 20 which abuts the head 21 of the shift-rod 22, thus controlling the opening and closing of the gripper jaws. The inclination of the wobble plate 3 to the shaft 2, and hence the reciprocal stroke of the gripper, is adjustable by means of a stop 29 on a shift sleeve 30 which is axially displaceable by means of a set-screw 31. The cam 13 is displaceable on the shaft 14 so that its axial position may be varied oppositely to that of the wobble plate 3, maintaining a constant opening movement of the gripper jaws.
