Abstract

1,270,727. Gantry cranes on ships. UNITED INDUSTRIAL SYNDICATE Inc. 14 Nov., 1969 [6 Dec., 1968], No. 55879/69. Heading B8B. [Also in Division E2] A travelling shipboard gantry crane A with four legs B running on rails 10 is combined with an anchoring device D which comprises an anchor tower 15 for each leg B supported on the deck of the ship C at the desired stowage location. All the legs B are anchored as described for the leg B shown. The tower 15 includes a vertical screw jack 16 supporting a tubular post 19 on a rotatable sleeve 18 threaded on shank 17. The shank 17 rests on a resilient pre-loading pad 32 and rotation of the sleeve 18 adjusts head 20 of the post 19 through a bearing 21 into engagement with an anchor receptacle 14 in an overhanging structure 13 on the outboard side of the crane, the crane being positioned by one of a pair of jacks 39, (40), Fig. 5 (not shown), pivotally attached to the tower 15 and engaged with a plate 43 on the leg B for this purpose. The head 20 is then clamped by a pair of wedge devices 22, (23), Fig. 3 (not shown) and the post 19 secured to the tower 15 by a yoke clamp assembly 28. The other of the pair of jacks 39, (40) is then connected to the plate 43 and both the jacks 39, (40) tightened down.
