Abstract

1,266,658. Papermaking. CROWN ZELLERBACH CORP. 16 July, 1970 [18 Aug., 1969], No. 34613/70. Headings D2A and D2B. [Also in Division F2] A wet-laid web of fibres is advanced at a moisture content between 18 and 40% through the nip provided by a pair of rolls each having a surface hardness at 70‹F of between 0 and 10, but harder than O, P and J Plastometer (1/8" ball), and applying pressure greater than 50 pounds per lineal inch to the web as it advances through the nip. A headbox discharges stock onto a Fourdrinier wire, and the web is couched, pressed and dried. The roll couple of the invention is then located intermediate the dryers. The rolls may be hollow tubes of metal covered with rubber compounded with finely ground stone aggregate. Cooling liquid may be passed through these rolls. Either one or both rolls may be positively driven. Hydroxy-ethyl starch may be applied at a size press. The paper may be further calendered or supercalendered after full drying.
