Abstract

1,265,620. Ring spinners. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 22 Oct., 1970 [24 Oct., 1969], No. 50197/70. Heading DID. A pneumatic fluid bearing and brake assembly for use in textile spinning rings to minimise wastage of yarn or thread fed to a spool 14 through a traveller 50 has an inlet 28 leading to a foraminous sleeve 24 the upper surface 42 of which is separated from the radial wall 40 of flange 38 forming part of a bearing member 32 which together with a chamber 26 constitutes the fluid bearing and air is fed to an inlet 72 of the brake assembly from chamber 26 through a counter-bore 82 in which is positioned a further foraminous member. A choke 86 may be located in counterbore 82 which leads by way of a conduit 76, 78 and restricted passage 80 to an outlet 74. When the flow through outlet 74 is closed by means for example, of a valve, the back pressure created causes pressure downstream of restrictor 86 to pass to a chamber 70 causing a piston 68 to advance and engage flange 38 to apply a braking action to the member 32.
