Abstract

[Also in Division D1] Acrylic crimped composite filaments of either the side-by-side, i.e. conjugate type, or the eccentric sheath-core type comprise two components, one being polyacrylonitrile, the other being an acrylonitrile-methacrylonitrile copolymer containing from 5 to 50% (preferably 7 to 30%) by weight of methacrylonitrile and the polyacrylonitrile component occupying the outer portion of each crimp. Either one or both components of the composite filaments may contain from 0À3 to 6% by weight of a monomer unit having a -SO 3 X or -OSO 3 X group, where X is a monovalent alkali metal, -NH 4 or hydrogen. Examples of such monomers are 2-vinyl pyridine, 2-methyl-5-vinyl pyridine, vinyl benzenesulphonic acid, and sodium methallyl sulphonate. 'The filaments may be produced by separately dissolving polyacrylonitrile and acrylonitrile-methacrylonitrile copolymer containing from 5-50% methacrylonitrile in a solvent suitable for dry-spinning, extruding the resulting spinning solutions simultaneously in side-by-side or eccentric sheath-core relationship into an evaporative medium to form composite filament, drawing said filament in a hot water bath, drying the drawn filament and then heating the dried filament in a relaxed state to develop crimps. The filaments may be mechanically crimped before being subjected to the relaxing step.
