Abstract

1,225,015. Polyacrylonitrile composite heatcrimpable filaments. INSTYTUT WLOKIEN SZTUCZNYCH I SYNTETYCZNYCH. 11 April, 1968 [12 April, 1967], No. 17440/68. Heading B5B. Heat crimpable polyacrylonitrile composite filaments are produced by simultaneously extruding through each extrusion orifice of a spinneret (adapted for the spinning of composite filaments) into a spin bath consisting of a dilute aqueous solution of sodium thiocyanate a solution of polyacrylonitrile in a concentrated aqueous solution of sodium thiocyanate and a solution in a concentrated aqueous solution of sodium thiocyanate of a partially hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile. The proportion by weight of hydrolysed polyacrylonitrile in the composite filaments may be 5 to 95% (preferably 15 to 50%) based on the weight of the combined spinning solutions. The acrylonitrile polymers used may be the homopolymers or copolymers of acrylonitrile with another monomer, the copolymer containing at least 80% by weight of acrylonitrile units. In an example, two spinning solutions each containing 12% by weight of acrylonitrile polymer dissolved in a 51% aqueous solution of sodium thiocyanate are simultaneously extruded at equal rates without being mixed through each extrusion orifice of a spinneret adapted for the spinning of composite filaments into a 10% aqueous solution of sodium thiocyanate at a temperature of about 10‹ C. to form composite filaments. One polymer is a copolymer of acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate and itaconic acid in the weight ratio 93: 6: 1 and the other polyacrylonitrile which has been partially hydrolysed by boiling with an aqueous solution of a caustic alkali until its nitrogen content is reduced to 22% by weight. The composite filaments thereby formed are stretched in steam at a stretch ratio of 8: 1, washed with water at 50‹ C., dried at 80‹ C. and shrunk in water at 100‹ C. whereby the filaments develop about 6 helical crimps per cm. due to the difference in the shrinkability of polyacrylonitrile and partially hydrolysed polyacrylonitrile.
