Abstract
1,262,973. Explosive compositions. ATLAS CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Inc. 1 April, 1969, No. 17114/69. Heading C1D. A blasting composition comprises an aqueous ammonium nitrate solution emulsified in a carbonaceous fuel with the aid of a water-in-oil emulsifying agent, and also comprises at least 4% by volume of an occluded gas. Additional oxidizing materials which may be included are sodium nitrate, chlorate, or perchlorate, corresponding salts of Ca, K, NH 4 , Li, Mg, Al, Ba, or Zn, and ethylene diamine dichlorate or diperchlorate. Mannose, glucose, sucrose, fructose, maltose, and molasses may be added to the aqueous component as additional fuels. The carbonaceous fuel may be a hydrocarbon wax, spermaceti, beeswax, or Chinese wax; to the wax may be added a hydrocarbon oil, natural or synthetic rubber, or a polymeric material, several of which are specified. Supplementary fuels which may be added to the carbonaceous material are fatty acids, higher alcohols, and vegetable oils, examples of which are given. Other fuel ingredients specified are coal, graphite, sulphur, Al, and Mg. Several suitable water-in-oil emulsifying agents are specified. The composition may be formed by mixing the aqueous solution with the fuel containing the emulsifying agent at raised temperature (e.g. 70-190‹ F.), stirring to occlude the gas, and then cooling, when the fuel phase may solidify and crystals may be formed in the aqueous phase; alternatively the gas may be introduced directly. Air is the preferred gaseous component but reference is made also to gaseous hydrocarbons, N 2 O, N 2 , CO 2 , and pure O 2 . Alternatively the gas may be introduced as gas-containing particles, for example hollow microspheres of glass or resinous material. Reference is also made to the addition of TNT and nitroparaffins. In examples the following ingredients are used: crystalline wax, fuel oil, motor oil, polymermodified lubricating oil, isobutylene polymer, ammonium nitrate, sodium and potassium nitrates, water, finely divided carbon, particulate Al, D.N.T., hollow glass particles, and, as emulsifying agents, fatty acid mono- and diglycerides, oleyl acid phosphate, polyoxyethylene (2) oleyl ether, sorbitan mono-oleate, monolaurate, monopalmitate, monostearate, and tristearate, and polymeric fatty amines.
