An apparatus for opening imperfect cigarettes comprises a resilient conveyer 4 and a cooperating roller 6 spaced a short distance apart, the roller 6 having circumferential grooves of general V-section and so dimensioned that a cigarette fed longitudinally to the nip between it and the conveyer 4 is so engaged by the opposed faces of a groove and the conveyer 4, or so compressed by a crest between two adjacent grooves and the conveyer 4, that the cigarette paper is ruptured. Cigarettes are fed from a hopper 1 by a vibratory conveyer 2, having guide blades to orientate them longitudinally, onto the conveyer 4 where they pass under a wetted roller 16 and onto the resilient part of the conveyer 4 which lies between its nip with the roller 6 and a plate 17. The resilience of the conveyer 4 prevents bursting of cigarette tips passing through the nip. The ruptured cigarettes pass on to a beater 8 which separates the tobacco, paper and tips. Provision is made for adjusting the height of the roller 6 above the conveyer 4. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 not shown, the resilient conveyer takes the form of a soft rubber covered roller (13) mounted with its axis vertically below the axis of the roller 6, the conveyer 2 being extended to terminate close to the nip between the rollers 6, (13).
