Abstract

1,262,271. Stern tube bearing. TURNBULL MARINE DESIGN CO. Ltd. 23 Jan., 1969 [5 Feb., 1968], No. 5755/68. Heading B7S. A ship propeller shaft stern bearing arrangement comprises a housing 14 inserted into an opening 18 in the stern of a ship, a split bearing in the housing and an outboard seal 30 around the shaft for preventing the entry of water through the housing, a part of the bearing being removable forwardly from the housing, without disturbing the seal, to allow inspection of the shaft from within the ship while the ship is afloat. In the embodiment shown the split bearing comprises an upper part formed by a bearing cap 16 and a bearing half 11 secured to the bearing cap and a lower part formed by a portion in one piece with the lower half of the housing and by a bearing half 12 secured to this portion. The upper part of the bearing is removable along track 45.
