Abstract

1,260,321. Semi-conductor radiation detectors. FIZICHESKY INSTITUT IMENI PN. LEBEDEVA. 29 Sept., 1969 [27 Sept., 1968], No. 47831/69. Heading H1K. [Also in Division G1] A nuclear radiation detector comprises a type IIa or intermediate type diamond 3 having a blocking contact 4 and an injecting contact 5, both of which are made of materials having atomic numbers of, at most, 15. The thickness of the diamond 3, which may be recessed in the operative region, is less than the carrier diffusion length. A power supply is connected to the injecting contact 5 through a resistor, and an amplifier and recorder are connected to the blocking contact 4. Suitable materials for the contacts 3, 4 include SiC and graphite. The detector is preferably situated in a light metal housing 1; e.g. of Al; and may be potted in epoxy resin or glue. It may be used to detect ionizing nuclear radiations in the presence of a gamma-radiation background, or to measure rate of energy loss of nuclear radiation. Two detectors, one thinner and one thicker than the radiation penetration length is diamond, may be mounted together to make both types of measurement. A mosaic arrangement of such detectors may also be used.
