Abstract

1, 067,053. Scintillation spectrometers. QUARTZ & SILICE. April 15, 1965 [April 16, 1964], No. 16299/65. Heading G1A. The main scintillator element of a scintillation spectrograph or spectrometer is provided with a reference α - particle source disposed on a metal disc, which is mounted on a scintillating pellet, optically coupled to the main scintillator crystal. The disc may be of platinum and the source an α - emitter such as Pu -239, Am - 241 or 243, Po - 208, &c. The crystal and pellet may both be of INa (T1), the pellet being a cleaved slice and therefore crystographically pure. The thickness of the slice is made such as to stop α - particles of about 4 - 6 MeV which includes those emitted by the reference source. The spectrum to be measured is easily differentiated from the reference source spectrum Fig. 2 (not shown), since the energy ranges of these are separated, and the detector circuit is provided with a discriminator or amplitude selector to handle the two ranges of pulses. The scintillator crystal has a photo-multiplier detector which is followed by amplifier 6, Fig. 3 (not shown) discriminator 7 and integrator 8 together with a unit 9 which controls the photo-multiplier H. T. supply to suppress variations in sensitivity of the apparatus.
