A warp knitted fabric with wefts 2, Fig. 1, laid into warp knitted chain stitches 3 is formed by simultaneously laying a number of weft threads from stationary bobbins 38, Fig. 2 and 5 across a continuously moving conveyor comprising chains 6', 6" carrying pairs of grippers 21 with mechanically operable jaws, simultaneously moving the pairs of opened jaws and the laid weft threads towards one another and closing the jaws to entrain the threads which are thereupon cut from the sources 38, the entrained weft threads being carried by the conveyor to the knitting station 20 where they are embodied into the warp knitted chain stitches. The fabric may also have flush loops 5, Fig. 1, incorporated therein. In Fig. 5 the weft threads, fed through guides 36, are gripped by cam-operated grippers 28 on a carrier member 29 carried by chains 30 and pulled across the path of the chains 6', 6". The grippers 21 are then opened by cams, lifted by cam means 44 to engage the threads, and reclosed, the ends adjacent the guides 36 being cut by scissors. In a modification, Fig. 6-8 (not shown) the weft threads are fed across the conveyor 6" pneumatically through nozzles (47) and tubes (48) slit along their lower side to enable the threads after engagement by the grippers 21 to be lowered through the tube wall. The fabric may be made from wool, cotton, viscose, polymers, polycondensates, copolymers, metal materials or asbestos and may be patterned by omitting some warp chains or by using different coloured threads and the distribution of the weft threads may be controlled by a Jacquard mechanism.
