A metal of Group VA or VIA is heated in an atmosphere of hydrogen and water vapour to a temperature at which the heat of formation of carbon monoxide exceeds that of the metal oxide, the ratio H 2 O:H 2 ratio being maintained between an upper limit at which the metal would be oxidized at that temperature and a lower limit below which carbon would not be oxidized. If the metal has a volatile oxide the atmosphere may additionally include argon, particularly 50% by volume thereof. Treatment in pure hydrogen and then in inert gas or vacuum, may follow.
