Abstract
1346343 Decarburizing A FINKL & SONS CO 19 April 1971 [21 April 1970] 27323/71 Heading C7D Extra-low carbon(#0À03%) steel is produced by adding an oxidising medium in controlled amounts downwardly from one or more points to the surface of a molten steel charge having a C content higher than the desired final value, while subjecting the charge to vacuum and meanwhile stirring it in such manner that the metalvacuum or metal-slag-vacuum interface is interrupted to present undecarburised steel to the oxidising medium, and adding heat by striking an electric arc between an electrode and the charge. Ladle 72 for molten metal has purging gas inlets 73, 74, arc electrodes 53, 54, thermocouple 64, feed hopper 68 and O 2 lance 42 behind the electrodes Fig.3 (not shown). The initial charge is preferably stainless steel with as low a C content as can be conventionally obtained without oxidation of Cr, and stirring is preferably by gas purging e.g. with Ar, with or without other stirring, e.g. induction stirring. An endothermic decarburizer such as millscale, Fe ore, Cr ore or NiO may be used; the heat balance is provided by electric arc heating with or without O 2 lance heating - the O 2 may contain cooling gas if necessary.
