Abstract
1,258,369. Pipe stopper. R. F. KEMPSON. 21 July, 1970, No. 35292/70. Heading F2P. A pipe stopper, comprising a shaft 1 with a tapered end 3 surrounded by a gripping ring 4 followed by a collar 6, seal 7 and seal expander 8, having a tapered surface 8a, the shaft being sealed in the collar 6, is inserted in a pipe 13 and the seal expander is moved axially relative to the shaft to initially expand the gripping ring up the taper 3 to grip the pipe and then to expand the seal against the pipe. The gripping ring 4 comprises a plurality of segments 4a, 4b &c., held to the taper 3 by a spring retaining ring 5 or springs attached to adjacent faces of the segments. The tapered end 3 is conical or polygonal, the gripping ring segments 4a, 4b &c. conforming to its surface. The seal expander 8 is operated by an hydraulic ram, or by a nut 9 engaging a threaded end 2 of the shaft 1; the nut may be integral with the expander. A bore 14, 15 passes through the shaft 1 to connect the pipe interior with a bore 16 in a plug 12, fixed to the shaft, which is connected to a pressure inlet 17 for pressurizing the pipe interior during pressure testing.
