Abstract

1,252,191. Non-woven fabrics. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 19 May, 1970 [9 July, 1969], No. 34704/69. Headings D1P and D1R. Sulpholane (tetramethylene sulphone), unsubstituted or carrying up to 8 carbon atoms, blended with an organic diluent is applied to fibrous materials as a latent solvent, so that on heating the fibres bond to each other by being partly dissolved in the sulpholane. At least 25% of the fibres comprise one or more of polyacrylonitrile (85-100% acrylonitrile). Modacrylic (35-285% acrylonitrile), chlorofibres (vinyl or vinylidene chloride or copolymers thereof) or cellulose esters, cellulose diacetate, triacetate or acetobutyrate, vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, vinyl pynidine or styrene may be copolymerised with acrylonitrile or the chloro monomers. The remaining fibres, if any, of the blend may be wool or other natural or synthetic fibres. The diluent is diethylene or triethylene glycol, dibutylphthalate, triethanolamine, 3-octyl sulphonyl ether. Trichloropropyl phosphate or alcohol or glycerol alkoxylates, the evaporation rate of the diluent being 0.01 to 3.5 times that of the sulpholane at 100‹C. The blend may contain water. Carded or air-laid webs of staple fibres are cross-laid to form batts. The bonding blend may be sprayed, dripped or padded onto the fibres, the web or the batt. Compressed air may be used to force the blend through the batt, which may be treated from both sides. Heat is then applied. The batt may be needled or stitched before or after treatment with the bonding blend. Non-woven fabrics and blankets, knitted or tuffed articles and other woven frabrics may be surface bonded by spraying or padding with the blend to reduce piling.
