Abstract

1,250,064. Refractory-oxide-Ni-Cr alloy powder. SHERRITT GORDON MINES Ltd. July 10, 1969 [Aug.19, 1968], No.34861/69. Heading C7D. Nickel powder particles containing physically inseparable sub-micron refractory oxide particles at least a portion of which are fixed on the surfaces of the Ni particles, are mixed with a powder consisting of one or more of Cr, Cr 2 O 3 and Cr(OH) 3 , dry pure hydrogen is flowed over a bed of the mixture which is heated to above 650‹ C. but below the sintering temperature of the mixture and the heating is continued until all the Cr has diffused into the Ni particles and any oxygen, other than that in the refractory oxide, in the mixture is less than 0.6%, the refractory oxide containing Ni-Cr alloy powder then being recovered. The original Ni powder may be obtained by direct hydrogen reduction of an aqueous suspension of ThO 2 -impregnated basic Ni compounds. The product of the diffusion process comprises clusters, up to 50 Á in size, of spheroidal uniformly alloyed Ni-Cr alloy particles with a diameter of up to 5Á, and containing up to 25 volume per cent of discrete sub-micron refractory oxide particles a major portion of which are uniformly distributed on the surfaces of the spheroidal particles.
