Abstract

1,246,244. Boring. earth. HEATH & SHERWOOD DRILLING Ltd. 18 Feb., 1970 [21 Feb., 1969], No. 7896/70. Heading E1F. A method of core drilling suitable for drilling a hole in a non-supporting formation. with a drill comprising an annular diamond bit, a core barrel, and a drill pipe of substantially uniform external diameter, consists of maintaining a radial clearance between the surface of the hole and the external surface of the drill pipe of substantially 2 to 15% of the external diameter of the pipe, and circulating an oil base emulsive mud through the clearance between the pipe and hole. The mud may be an emulsion of brine and oil having substantially negative water loss characteristics and containing emulsifying and stabilizing agents and optionally a weighting material. Examples of muds are given. The top 10% of a hole, which may be drilled by a trione or diamond bit, may be used.
