Abstract

1,246,240. Vehicle lamps. G.T.E. SYLVANIA Inc. 9 April, 1970 [9 April, 1969], No. 16984/70. Heading F4R. [Also in Division H2] A supplementary headlamp producing a high intensity long range beam comprises a canister or housing 70 containing a reflector 62, a removable socket cover 10 at one end of the canister, a lamp holder 36 resiliently mounted on the cover, and a capless bulb 38 located in the lamp holder. The cover, which is made from insulating material such as phenolic resin, has embedded therein a pair of outwardly directed contact spades 18, a pair of sockets 14 connected to the respective spades, a pair of studs 28 which support the lamp holder, and a set of screws 56 which co-operate with keyhole slots 66 in the end surface 64 of the canister to secure the cover releasably to the canister. The lamp holder 36 is in the form of a harness composed of two overlapping pieces which embrace the press-seal of the bulb 38 and are carried by a flared horn 32 which slides on the studs 28 under the control of springs 30 surrounding the studs. The bulb is locked in the harness by means of a curved wire 50 which is pivotally connected to ears 22 and engages over a node 44 on the press seal. The lead-in wires 42 of the bulb extend through holes in the horn and the enlarged ends 40 engage slidably in the sockets 14. When the cover is applied to the canister the bulb passes first through an aperture 68 in the end surface 64 and then through a further aperture at the apex of the reflector until the horn 32 engages over an apex ring 63 on the reflector. Further movement of the cover towards the canister to engage the screws 56 in the slots 66 causes the horn to slide down the studs 28 against the force of the springs 30 and an O-ring 60 to be compressed between the end of the canister and a groove 58 in the cover.
