1,244,760. Non-foamed granules containing expanding agent. CHEMISCHE WERKE HœLS A.G. 17 Jan., 1969 [18 Jan., 1968], No. 2819/69. Heading B5A. Non-expanded plastics granules containing expanding agent are prepared by extruding strands of a mixture of plastics material and expanding agent into a pressure chamber, cooling the strand in the pressure chamber to below the activation temperature of the blowing agent at atmospheric pressure, discharging the strands from the pressure chamber through openings adjusted to the shape of the strands and covered with a sealing liquid and cutting the strand into granules. Preferably the extrusion die outlet is surrounded by liquid which acts as the coolant and also as the sealing liquid. A highly-viscous liquid, immiscible with the cooling liquid may also be used as the sealing liquid, the outlet from the pressure chamber being either at the top or bottom thereof depending on the relative densities of the sealing and cooling liquids. The sealing liquid may be partially frozen by cooling the openings.
